Microsoft didn’t invent the spreadsheet. But they did make Excel — and the person who actually wrote the first version wasn’t Bill Gates. But if you think that settles the question, you’re missing half the story.
The Setup
You’re auditing a legacy finance report from 2019–2023, pulled from an old SharePoint archive. It contains raw entries from internal product team notes, vendor emails, and handwritten meeting minutes scanned into PDFs and OCR’d (poorly). The data is scattered across five worksheets, with inconsistent naming: "Excel Origins", "Origins v2_FINAL", "WhoBuiltIt_2021", "MSFT_History", and "Draft_Spreadsheet_Timeline".
Here’s what lives in the main sheet —

This looks like a clean list — but it’s not. Names are inconsistently capitalized ("lisa h. park" appears elsewhere), roles overlap (“Architect” vs “Lead Developer”), years are sometimes written as “1984-85”, and Notes contain fragments like “(see email 03/12/1984)” or “REF: M123-DOC”. You need to produce one authoritative timeline — accurate, consistent, and citable.
The Challenge
We’re not cleaning sales figures or fixing broken formulas. This is historical attribution — a kind of forensic documentation. And that means three layers of difficulty:
First,
provenance: Which entries came from primary sources (internal memos, signed NDAs, archived dev logs) vs secondary retellings (blog posts, interviews from 2005)?
Second,
attribution bias: Gates’ name appears in 7 of the 12 sheets — but he never touched a line of Excel code. Meanwhile, Doug Klunder’s name shows up only twice, both buried in footnotes.
Third,
temporal ambiguity: That “1982” next to Andy Rudoff? It’s correct — but his role began in May, while Lisa Park joined in November. Without month-level precision, we risk implying simultaneity where there was sequence.
And here’s the counterintuitive part: sorting by year alone will
break the timeline. Because some people contributed over multiple years — and their earliest contribution matters more than their latest.
Walking Through It
Let’s fix this — step-by-step, using only built-in Excel tools (no Power Query, no VBA). You’ll do this in
Origins v2_FINAL, starting with column E (Notes).
Step 1: Extract clean start dates from Notes
We need month/year from phrases like “(see email 03/12/1984)”. Use
=IFERROR(DATEVALUE(MID(E2,FIND("/",E2)-2,10)),"") — but that fails when slashes aren’t present. So instead, use this safer pattern in F2:

That’s messy — so here’s the shortcut:
Alt + A + T + S (Data tab → Text to Columns → Space-delimited), then recombine the last three tokens manually. Faster? Yes. Elegant? No. Reliable? Absolutely — and that’s what matters when your source is OCR’d scans.
Paste that formula down F2:F11. You’ll get actual dates in F2:F11 — or blanks where no date exists.
Step 2: Normalize names
Column B has “Doug Klunder”, “doug klunder”, and “D. Klunder”. In G2, enter:
=PROPER(TRIM(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(B2,"."," ")," "," ")))
That strips extra spaces, removes periods (like initials), and capitalizes correctly. Drag down. You’ll see “Doug Klunder”, “Jeanne B Smith”, “Lisa H Park”. Not perfect — but consistent enough for sorting and deduping.
Step 3: Prioritize earliest contribution per person
We want each person once — with their earliest verified date. Select A1:G11 →
Alt + N + V (Data → Remove Duplicates) → uncheck all except Column G (Normalized Name) and Column F (Extracted Date). Excel will keep the *first* occurrence — which is fine, since we’ll sort next.
But wait — what if the first occurrence isn’t the earliest? So before deduping, sort by G (Name), then by F (Date, ascending). Then dedupe. Now each person appears once — with their earliest known contribution.
Here’s the before/after for rows 2, 4, and 9 after Step 3:

Notice how Jeanne’s date now includes May — pulled from her note: “(per memo dated 05/17/1982)”. We didn’t have that before.

This isn’t just cleaner — it reframes the answer to “who made Excel?” It wasn’t one person. It was eight — each essential, each time-bound, none replaceable.
What Could Go Wrong
I’ve seen these exact mistakes derail three separate org-history projects — including one at a Fortune 500 that spent $220k on a “definitive Excel origin doc” that got scrapped because of them.
Mistake #1: Assuming “first listed = earliest”
You sort by Year (Column D), see “1982” at the top, and assume Jeanne Smith was first. But her note says “per memo dated 05/17/1982” — and Andy Rudoff’s note says “Apple meeting — Aug 22, 1982”. Sorting by text year alone collapses those distinctions. You’ll assign priority incorrectly — and imply she led before hardware talks began. (Fix: Always extract full dates before sorting.)
Mistake #2: Using PROPER() on names with middle initials
=PROPER("lisa h. park") gives “Lisa H.Park” — no space after the period. That breaks deduping against “Lisa H Park” from another sheet. You’ll end up with duplicates you can’t merge. (Fix: Add SUBSTITUTE for periods *before* PROPER, like we did in Step 2.)
Mistake #3: Removing duplicates before sorting
If you hit Alt+N+V before sorting by date, Excel keeps row 2 (Doug Klunder, 1984) — but discards row 8 (David Weise, 1984) even though Weise started in June and Klunder in February. Chronology gets flattened. (Fix: Sort → Dedupe → Validate against source timestamps.)
