What Most People Miss About How OneNote Works with Outlook

Why does clicking 'Send to OneNote' do nothing? Why does your colleague save meeting notes to OneNote but yours won’t attach? Why does the OneNote icon vanish from your Outlook ribbon after a restart? Because Outlook doesn’t *really* know OneNote is installed — unless you tell it, twice, in two different places, and only if OneNote is running *before* Outlook starts. That’s not a bug. The Fix

Select notebook: Clients/Acme Corp, Projects/2024/Q3, or Archive/2023 — not your personal notebook
Uncheck “Use default notebook” if you want control

Now test: Open an email. Click OneNote > Send to OneNote. It should open a dialog with section dropdowns. Not a blank page. Not an error.

If That Doesn't Work

Try these — in order:

Re-register the add-in: Run Command Prompt as Admin → type "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\OUTLOOK.EXE" /resettb (adjust path for Office16 = 365/2016, Office15 = 2013, Office14 = 2010). Then repeat The Fix.
Disable conflicting add-ins: In File > Options > Add-Ins > COM Add-ins > Go…, uncheck everything except OneNote Notes Add-in. Restart.
Force OneNote 2016 mode: Outlook 365 sometimes ignores OneNote for Windows 10. Install OneNote 2016 (standalone, free from Microsoft), then repeat The Fix. Yes — run two OneNotes. No — they won’t conflict.
Reset ribbon cache: Close Outlook. Navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Outlook\RibbonCache. Delete all files. Restart.

Don’t waste time checking Windows permissions, firewall rules, or Group Policy — those affect sync, not ribbon visibility.

Preventing It Next Time

Set OneNote to start with Windows — not Outlook. Use Task Manager > Startup tab → enable OneNote. That guarantees it’s running before Outlook launches. Also: Never uninstall OneNote via Control Panel > Programs. Use Settings > Apps > OneNote > Uninstall — or better yet, don’t uninstall it at all. Reinstalling triggers the COM registration again.
