The first thing most people do when they see green spot algae on their Java fern is dose Seachem Excel at double the label rate. That’s not just ineffective — it’s actively harmful to beneficial biofilm and can trigger cyanobacteria blooms in low-flow tanks.
The Myth
Most aquarists believe Seachem Excel is an ‘algae killer’ — a chemical weedkiller for tanks. They treat it like Roundup: pour more, get faster results. Forums are full of posts saying ‘I dosed 2x daily for 3 days and the hair algae vanished!’ But what they’re really seeing is temporary bleaching of surface cells — not death. The rhizomes survive. The roots regrow in 4–7 days. And the carbon source (excess nutrients) remains untouched.
The Reality
Seachem Excel contains glutaraldehyde — a biocide that inhibits glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), a key enzyme in the Calvin cycle. It doesn’t ‘kill algae’. It slows photosynthesis — selectively, and only in actively growing, exposed filaments. It has zero effect on diatoms, blue-green (cyanobacteria), or spores embedded in substrate.

Why the Myth Persists
Early 2000s aquarium forums ran unverified ‘spot treatment’ videos — one influencer dipped a syringe into Excel and blasted BBA off driftwood. Viewers saw immediate whitening and assumed eradication. No follow-up. No control group. Those posts still rank #1 on Google for ‘how to kill BBA with Excel’.
Also: Seachem’s own label says ‘controls algae’. Not ‘kills’. Not ‘eradicates’. But ‘controls’ got lost in translation. And Excel’s fast visual effect — especially on Spirogyra in high-light tanks — created false confidence. People stopped testing phosphate (C12:C20), nitrate (D12:D20), and flow maps (F2:F15). They treated the symptom, not the cause.
The Right Way
Excel works — but only as part of a precision protocol. Do this:
- Test first: Run a phosphate test on water from the algae site — use API Phosphate Test Kit, compare to chart in cell A1:A8. If PO₄ > 0.5 ppm, Excel won’t help. Fix that first.

Exceptions
There are two cases where Excel does act like an algae killer — but only because of collateral damage:
- Overdosed in low-biofilter tanks: At ≥1.5× label dose in a new 10-gallon tank with no established nitrifying bacteria (cells B2:B6 empty), Excel kills ammonia-oxidizing archaea. Ammonia spikes → algae crash → false attribution.
